Great podcasts are hard to make.

 CASE STUDY:

Africville Forever

Problem:

Africville is a community whose powerful story demands global recognition. It is a heartbreaking account of environmental racism, the forced displacement of a vibrant Black community, and the ongoing fight for social justice. Despite coverage through film, television, and radio, the survivors of Africville had not yet established a global presence in the growing world of podcasting—a medium uniquely suited to amplifying their voices and preserving their history.

The untold stories of Africville's resilience and legacy deserved to reach a worldwide audience, not only to highlight past injustices but also to inspire dialogue about equity and human rights in the present. Podcasting offered the perfect platform to authentically share these narratives, connecting deeply with listeners on a personal and emotional level while building a lasting record of the community's rich heritage and struggles.

“We’re not trying to seclude Africville to a certain piece or time of history. This is a forever thing.”

— Alfred Burgesson, Co-host of Africville Forever

Solution:

Collaborating closely with a new generation of activists and respected community elders, Podstarter played a key role in developing the project and pitching it to strategic partners. With support from Rogers Sports & Media’s Frequency Podcast Network, the project secured funding, enabling us to invest in local talent, artists, and contributors throughout the production process.

Guided by the authentic voices of the community, the storytelling was deeply emotional and resonant, resulting in a powerful and impactful limited series.

Outcome:

The launch of Africville Forever garnered widespread national media attention and earned glowing critical reviews, solidifying its place as a standout production. With an impressive 84% completion rate, the show captivated listeners and reached audiences far beyond Nova Scotia, resonating across Canada and internationally. Its success culminated in being honored as one of Amazon Music’s ‘Best Podcasts of 2022,’ a testament to its quality and impact.

This achievement has given the Africville community a powerful and enduring voice in the podcasting world, establishing a platform to share their stories, history, and culture with a global audience. The podcast not only amplified the community’s presence but also paved the way for more inclusive storytelling in the medium.
